Are they cute or creepy? 🤔 I think cute!! There are 10,000 species of isopods found worldwide in saltwater, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. They all have exoskeletons, fourteen kegs (seven pairs) and two sets of antennae. They range in size from just a few millimeters to 50cm (20 inches). Pill bugs (aka rolly-pollys or woodlice) are terrestrial isopods! Rockweed isopods (Pentidotea wosnesenskii) are marine critters that can be found from British Columbia to California, hanging out in

Out with the old, in with the new. Just like other arthropods, tarantulas have to shed their exoskeletons as they grow. They wait until their new, fresh “skin” is ready to go underneath and then the process begins. They’ll find a safe place, flip upside down and wiggle their way out of the old exoskeleton. It takes a day or two before their new “skin” is hardened up completely, so they’re extra vulnerable during this time. Young tarantulas molt every few weeks or months, but by the time they’re

Meet the Empress Cicada. It spends years underground as a nymph before emerging, shedding its exoskeleton, and transforming into a winged adult. Males produce extremely loud mating calls using specialized organs called tymbals, with some cicadas reaching sound levels comparable to a chainsaw or subway train. While singing, they can reduce the sensitivity of their own hearing by mechanically folding their tympanal membranes, effectively turning down their internal “volume” by about 20 decibels. B

Crab exoskeletons don’t grow so crabs actually have to shed them and develop new ones. Talking about hermit crabs gets confusing because they have to abandon their “house” shell and they also have to shed their “skin” shell usually around the same time. #fyp

Scorpions are amazing and the fact that they have no bones but instead they have a thing called a EXO skeleton is pretty cool 😎 Even cooler is how under a black light they turn turquoise with the reflection. It’s pretty awesome to say the least. Some scorpions are really dangerous but this is a type of emperor scorpion and as a rule the biggest scorpions are less dangerous but never mess with any scorpion unless you truly know the type and it’s venomous levels as safety is first ##scorpion##ref

Molting!!✨🐚 the long, vulnerable, and crucial process hermit crabs go through to grow! Like how a snake sheds its skin, a hermit crab sheds its exoskeleton. Frequency and duration can depend on size. It is SO important that we provide our hermies with proper diets to fuel their molts, (lots of calcium to recover!), proper substrate for where the molts happen, and that we never disturb them or the substrate! I have more information on molting linked in my bio under the hermit crab care resources
