A Lucky Escape!! Another nesting female in search of space to nest strayed off the beach and found herself in a near fatal situation. This turtle emerged on a narrow wet west coast beach. In her efforts to find dry sand she went under a fence into a property. After digging 10 times in the fenced off sand she fell down into a cemented watercourse. Landing on her back. In what was surely a miracle she avoided the foot deep water in which she would have surely drown and the grass cushioned her fall

* Sea turtle trapped under beach chairs lays eggs on the surface* A nesting turtle emerged last night and wedged herself under a stack of beach chairs while searching for space to nest. Wedged under the metal chair support she was unable to move to dig. Desperate - she eventually laid her eggs on the surface of the sand. She was found in the early hours of this morning with her eggs pooled around her - some broken from.her struggles. This little Turtle already faces a harsh reality with limited

Today, a crew from the Barbados Sea Turtle Project was spotted on Sandy Beach in Worthing, Christ Church, relocating turtle eggs to a safer location. With sea turtle nesting season running from May to October, conservationists are hard at work protecting nests that may be at risk from predators or human activity. #DidYouKnow Two of the world’s rarest sea creatures make their nests on the beaches of Barbados; the Hawksbill and the Leatherback Turtles. Our beaches are a favourite nesting ground for these endangered sea turtles which are fascinating animals and an important natural resource for our island. While visiting the island should you be lucky enough to see these little creatures making their way to the ocean, please take care and do not touch! #VisitBarbados #LoveBarbados #MyBarbados #TheBarbadosSe

In order to protect sea turtles, we need to protect their habitats, especially their nesting beaches. In Barbados, much of the development of the west and south coasts of the island occurred before there was adequate coastal zone regulation. This means that many properties are not set far enough back from the high water. With rising sea levels, this puts the squeeze on space available for sea turtles to nest, and exposes them to disorienting lights that can lead to injury and death. This 10 minu

**Sea Turtle Trapped in Roots - Rescued!!** A nesting female slid down a bank into a tangle of root last night and became trapped. The bark stripped from the roots and branches showed how she fought and struggled. Fortunately she was seen by John ( a member of the Queen's Street community) who notified us. We were able to tag her so we would know her if she was seen again, and quickly got her free. While her neck was at a bad angle and we believe she was uncomfortable and in pain, we think she w

Some of the 193 turtle hatchlings making their way down to the sea after being rescued and then released this evening by the hard-working Barbados Sea Turtle Project. These hatchlings set a quick pace down the beach, except for one litlle guy who was pretty sleepy and quite content to rest on the sand 🙂. One unfortunate hatchling had earlier lost a back flipper to a crab but persevered and made it into the sea! We wish them all the best as they begin their life's journey! | Barbados.org

*Rescued from Boulders* . 24hr Hotline - 230-0142 . This female emerged on the Richard Haynes Boardwalk to nest last night. After multiple unsuccessful attempts she crawled across a headland and plunged over the edge of the boardwalk onto the cement below. As she tried to return to the sea she became wedged in these boulders and was likely there for hours. She was found by passers-by this morning who called the hotline. A group of people then gathered and tried to help free her using a piece of

It's 11 days from the start of the nesting season and we have already had our first nesting female in need of rescue. She came up last night to lay eggs and attempted to return to the sea over the rocks. Like many others before her, she slipped between the boulders and became trapped. She was wedged head down with her neck pressed against the rocks. She was discovered around midday by Tyrique from the @o2beachclubbarbados who together with Che, Damon, Ronaldo and Jabari made a valient effort to

She walked along them until she found an area where she was able to climb onto the rocks. As she attempted to make her way across she plunged down into a space between the rocks. ***Green turtle with hook treated and released*** We received reports from catamaran and boat owners that this beautiful turtle was unable to open her mouth making eating and breathing difficult. Hayden Browne was able to bring her to shore and as always Dr. Gus Reader was ready and willing to assist. We took her to Central Veterinary Clinic Barbados where after a quick examination it was determined that a hook lodged in the area of her jaw was the problem. One quick removal later and a prescrip

Clips of today's day nesting Leatherback! Leatherbacks are the world's largest sea turtles. They face a variety of threats and are endangered. While we get very few nesting leatherbacks compared to other islands, every visit these gentle giants make to our shores is special. They nest mainly on the rough east coast where the waves can help them to emerge from the ocean. Laying around 100 tennis ball sized eggs they move vast swaths of sand as they lay and disguise their nests. After nesting they

This amazingly lucky turtle went into an empty lot, under a fence and into the busy south coast road. She crawled east towards the Sol Worthing station where she was spotted. The staff secured her and called the hotline. We were able to take her safely back to the beach after tagging and measuring. She crawled over 80 m up the road and miraculously she was not struck. The spot where she came through will be secured. A huge thank you to everyone who came together this morning to make the dream wo

With no lighting legislation in Barbados, the race to save our hatchlings from disorientation related mortality is on. Basically hatchlings which should be following the light reflected off the sea go instead inland to the brighter lights of the street and properties and die in large numbers in a variety of horrific ways. We expend every ounce of heart, blood, sweat and tears we have each season in a desperate bid to save as many as we can. We push our cars, finances and team to the very limit.
