Some players would literally do anything to get a germanium transistor pedal. They were inconsistent and sensitive to temperature and moisture with legends like Eric Johnson even chilling his Fuzz Faces in the fridge before a gig to nail the sound. And yet all the greats from Clapton to Jeff Beck to Jimmy Page relied on germanium Rangemasters or Fuzz Face transistors at some point.
